Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American Southern rock band that formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. Throughout the 1970s, they helped popularise the Southern rock genre, with hits such as 'Free Bird' and 'Sweet Home Alabama'. However, their fantastic success was brought to an abrupt halt on 20 October 1977 when three members of the band (lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing singer Cassie Gaines) were killed in an aeroplane crash in Gillsburg, Mississippi. The band reformed ten years later in 1987, with Van Zant's brother Johnny as frontman. As of 2012, Gary Rossington is the only original member of the band still in the line-up. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, and have sold over 35 million records worldwide as of 2012. The line-up of Lynyrd Skynyrd before the crash in 1977 was Ronnie Van Zant (vocals), Steve Gaines (guitar), Allen Collins (guitar), Gary Rossington (guitar), Artimus Pyle (drums), Leon Wilkeson (bass) and Billy Powell (keyboards).
